I needed a side discharge pump, I purchased this one with the hope of being able to rotate the pump on the motor to convert it to side discharge, I figured if I was unable to make it a side discharge pump, I could plumb it in as a top discharge.
After reading a review saying that they couldn't change the discharge direction, I figured I would be ok with that risk. Anyway it is very simple to rotate the pump, it is constructed like every other electric motor ever, with just 4 long skinny bolts holding the motor together and the pump to the motor.
All you have to do to change the discharge direction is to ensure that the pump is not connected to power, remove the filter basket, then remove the back cover. There are 4 small bolt heads (about ¼ inch or 7mm), unscrew all 4 of those bolts, then just rotate the pump on the motor a quarter turn (I had to wiggle the pump to get the bolt holes to line up), then resemble everything.

Pittman Great pool pump
The first pump I received had bad seal but customer service took care of the issue promptly. The second pump arrived in timely manner and has worked as described. Would highly recommend this product and if needed the customer service is exceptional.
