I am in the Hvac trade and for over 20 years I’ve been saving scrap bits of wire pulled out of junked equipment. Originally I would try to strip it by hand using a sharp blade to score the insulation but that gets very tedious so for years the bundles and coils of old used wire just piled up in my basement until I had three or four good sized bins of it, probably 200 - 300 lbs or so. I knew I could sell it as is for about 40% of the ‘clean’ price but it was never really top of mind since copper prices were never really super high, or on the occasions that the price did go high I was always too busy to haul it out of the basement and sort it for the scrap dealer. However, with the price at an all-time high I figured it was worth the investment to try and clean it up for sale. This VEVOR stripper went on sale and I had a couple of extra discounts I could use, so I ordered it and tried it out. It takes a bit of practice but for wire like THHN, 12 AWG or larger, this tool is a game changer. As long as you can keep the wire from tangling as it’s being pulled into the machine, it cuts a nice clean slice down the side so you can separate the strands from the insulation and pull it right out. That said, it’s not actually a stripper, it just does the scoring of the insulation so you can get at the wire. You still have to pull that out yourself. Also, I found it’s easiest to keep the lengths of wire under 20’ or so to keep the insulation strips and wire from tangling into a twisted mess, although I make those cuts after feeding the longer pieces thru the machine. In my experience so far, heavily insulated wire is more difficult because the cutting blade tends to go off-center in thick layers. When that happens, I run it through the machine again from a different angle to make a second cut which tends to help open it up. Also, I don’t have much luck on 16 AWG or smaller as it tends to twist out of the cutting track more often than is worth the effort. 14 AWG is a bit of a pain but if the wire isn’t in bad condition it’s doable. In the end, I find I can get about 30 pounds of bare bright wire in a bucket after about two hours at the machine, which is about how long I can stay motivated at this task at one time. At 5.50/lb, that paid for the machine in the first two hours! Of course, as my scrap pile gets smaller, the quality of the wire gets lower since I cherry-picked the easy stuff first, so it might not be that productive for too much longer. Still, I consider this a worthwhile investment for a quality tool.
